Majorette troupe from Stanmore going to national championships for second time

STANMORE'S majorette troupe has qualified for the national championships for the second time in two years - and will hope for a repeat performance of last year's stunning début trophy haul.
The Attwirlettes, a team of girls aged between 5 and 19 who dance with twirling batons, ribbons, wheels, maces, flags and pom poms and practise weekly at Culver Church in Culver Grove, Stanmore, recently came away from the first regional competition of the season, held in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, with armfuls of prizes.

Trainer Natalie Atwell, who established the group with mother Amanda and sister Vanessa in May 2008, said: "For most of these girls it was their first trophies. Two girls competed for the first time and considering this is only our second season of competing it is a massive achievement for some of these girls of whom last March were only just learning how to twirl.
"I am extremely proud of them. It means so much to me to be able to watch the girls performing and know that myself, along with my sister Vanessa have taught them everything they know.
"They still have so much to achieve and that adds that extra bit of sparkle to the sport we love.
"They work so hard and its wonderful to see it pay off at competitions."
The troupe, whose team colour is purple, will compete in the United Kingdom Federation of Majorettes' National Championships in May 2010 in East Sussex after scooping a raft of trophies in its début appearance at last year's contest in what was only the brigade's inaugural season.
Natalie is looking for new recruits in the form of boys and girls age 4 and above, whose parents should e-mail her at nelattwell@ntlworld.com for more details.
