Permission sought to demolish Bentley Priory bunker

Posted by Ian Proctor on Dec 9, 08 03:17 PM in Local Authority

Developers want to spend up to three months dismantling a bunker as part of the residential redevelopment of Bentley Priory.

VSM Estates is seeking permission from Harrow Council to retain the front wall and doors of the bunker for future reference - with an information board or plaque - while pulling down the roof and side walls.

The extracted material will be crushed and used to fill the hole while the topsoil removed is to be used to form an earthen sound-dampening barrier to protect the nearby homes.

Bentley Priory, in Stanmore, was a RAF base from which the Battle of Britain was orchestrated during the Second World War.

The site, sold on by the Ministry of Defence, is to become a luxury estate while part of the priory mansion itself will be converted into a Battle of Britain museum.
