Neighbours are being encouraged to get to know each other at a street party planned for Edgware.

Harrow Council's community and cultural services department will be throwing a beach and street party over the next few months to improve community relations.

The beach party will take place between 10am-4pm on August 31 at Alexandra Park, in Alexandra Avenue, South Harrow.

The event will involve dropping 20 tonnes of sand onto the park and paddling pools and donkeys will capture the magic of the seaside on the day.

It will be a free event to encourage people to talk to each other more.

A street party is also proposed in Edgware in September with musical performances from Stag Lane School, in Collier Drive, and Stanburn School, in Abercorn Road.

Residents are being consulted on whether they would like the party to go ahead and if so which street they would like the event to take place on, options include Collier Drive, Methuen Road and St David's Drive.

Jack Welby, of Merlin Crescent, said: "I received the letter on Monday and have to respond by Thursday. I think it is too short notice.

"If it is on Methuen Road it may cause traffic problems."

Councillor Chris Mote (Conservative), portfolio holder for community and cultural services, said: "The street party is part of a wider programme of events in our community calendar with activities being held across the borough.

"We regret that we have not been able to give residents more time to feedback their thoughts. The consultation period is short because we need six weeks to apply for the necessary traffic orders.

"It is something we are trying for the first time. So far, we have received positive responses with many residents expressing an interest to take part."

Future events being considered also include a board game marathon for residents.
