A man pounded the pavements over the bank holiday to raise £2,600 for a spinal cord injury charity based in Stanmore.
Cliff Diamond, from Edgware, took part in the Bupa London 10000 on May 26. The 47-year-old ran the 10k race in just over an hour in the pouring rain. He chose the charity as his daughter used the swimming pool at the Aspire National Training Centre, in Wood Lane, whilst recovering from a neck injury.
Mr Diamond said: "I chose to run in aid of Aspire because of my daughter's injury, she received a huge amount of support during her rehabilitation. I wanted to do my bit for them as well."

A benefits cheat who claimed she had breast cancer is due to be sentenced at Harrow Crown Court on Thursday (29).
Christine Areh, of Stag Lane, Stanmore, could face prison after fleecing more than £50,000 in council tax and rent benefits for a house she jointly owned.
She handed a forged certificate, stating she had cancer, to benefit chiefs as an excuse for her absence at a hearing.

UFOs in Stanmore skies

UFOBy Elaine Okyere

A Stanmore caterer has relived the moment she claims she spotted a UFO 24 years ago after the Ministry of Defence released secret files on paranormal sightings.

Ruth Novelli, of Bushey, said she saw the UFO at 9.45pm on April 26, in 1984, in her back garden in Belmont Lane, Stanmore.

The 61-year-old spotted the UFO after a neighbour alerted her to a strange object in the sky.

She said: "My next door neighbour knocked on my door and asked me to see what it was. I looked up and there was a light in the sky that was changing colours from pink to yellow to blue.

"It was also moving back and forth and up and down, but we weren't close enough to see it."

Mrs Novelli, who was 38 at the time, said: "My neighbour called the RAF to see whether they had anything up there and they didn't, so she called the police.

"The police blocked off the road and took pictures with a telescopic lense. I didn't know what it was. I wasn't scared, just mystified. It was there for three hours."

According to police reports at the time, an officer described the object as moving erractically and being "circular in the middle with a dome on the top and underneath".

The object appeared to be over the Borehamwood or Mill Hill area. Mrs Novelli believes that the police then followed the UFO as it moved down the M1, but they lost it when it took off at high speed.

Mrs Novelli, who co-owns Browns Cafe, in Church Road, Stanmore, has been bombarded with enquiries since the files were released. The new documents contain records from 1978 until 1987.

There have been more than 150 unexplained sightings in England the last 10 years. The last recorded sighting in Harrow was in October 2000, when a witness saw a luminous green stripe appearing in the sky at 5.50pm.

Maggie Daley, from The West of London Astronmical Society, thinks most sightings have a logical explanation.

She said: "I have never seen anything which I couldn't explain but wouldn't ridicule anyone who says they have had a close encounter of a third kind."

The space enthusiast also said that lights from aeroplanes, hovering hot air baloons, meteors burning up as they travel towards earth and bright stars were commonly mistaken for extraterrestial beings.

She said: "There used to be an illuminated air balloon which did journeys over north-west London at night. This was probably the cause for a number of UFO sightings."

Mrs Novelli has not seen anything like the object she saw in the sky again and is sceptical about what it actually was.

She said: "I don't believe or disbelieve. I'm not saying it was something from space. I'm just saying I don't know what it was."

Stanmore man drives to Jerusalem

Aly Singer and his carBy Elaine Okyere

Emigrating to new country is a big step and one Stanmore man is making it a journey of a lifetime by driving 2,500 miles to his new home in Israel.
Aly Singer, of London Road, is taking part in a charity car rally from London to Jerusalem, but instead of returning home with the other participants he will be starting a new life in the country.
The 28-year-old said: "It's quite an interesting way to do it, I didn't choose for it to happen like this, but it's a great opportunity.
"From a personal perspective I think a lot of Jewish people my age want to live there. I see Israel as my spirtual and historical homeland and somewhere that I want to take my life."
Mr Singer set off on the epic journey on May 18 with his friend Yaniv Cohen, from Manchester, as part of the JNF car rally. The rally started at 7am in Waterloo Place, in London, before venturing to France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece and finally Israel. JNF is a humanitarian charity, which helps support communities in Israel by building reservoirs, recycling schemes, housing and healthcare centres.
The Stanmore and Canons Park synagogue member will be completing his journey in a 1948 Rolls Royce silver racer in 18 days. Living abroad will not be a new experience for Mr Singer who previously lived in New York for a year, however Mr Singer feels that this move will be permanent.
He said: "I have visited Israel a number of times and my brother lives out there, but apart from that I don't have any other close family in the country, but a lot of my friends are living there already.
"My family has been really supportive and I will miss my parents, but this will give them the chance to visit me abroad."
The pair are sponsored by Nefesh B'Nefesh, an organisation which helps British immigrants start new lives in Israel.
The trip will end with Mr Singer and Mr Cohen being presented with Israeli identity cards at the Israeli Parliament by the Head of State and other dignitaries.
